22/11/22 Sara's third After effects workshop.

In this workshop, we created short movies that about a colour that we chose. Before the workshop, we had to choose a colour that we wanted to use and we had to do some research around it.

The colour that I chose for my movie was Yellow. I chose yellow because I felt that there would be many areas and meanings of this colour that could be explored in the movie. Yellow is a colour that has many connotations around the world. For example, in my research I found that in Egypt the colour yellow symbolises that they are mourning, but in Japan, it symbolises courage. But in American, it can be used to describe someone as a coward if they call someone a "Yellow Belly".In my movie, I am focusing on objects and connotations of yellow. So, I have included taxis, Different species of animals and facts about the colour yellow.

Below are the assets that I created in Illustrator for this movie.

These are some quick vector illustrations I created that will be used in the movie. These were created in illustrator. The imagery I have created relate to connotations of the colour yellow. I have drawn a Taxi, Taxi stripes and a yellow tail fish. These illustrations will be used in different sections of the movie.

This is a school of yellow tail fish, that I created in Illustrator. These are going to be used towards the end of the movie and will swim across the screen together, to represent how they would swim together in the sea.

Below, are screenshots, of each scene in the movie. I wanted to document this like a storyboard. There are also screenshots of the creation process of this project. These first images are frames, that I layer out in illustrator to create a story board for the movie.

This is the story board for the movie, This was created in illustrator using dartboards. I think that a storyboard is useful because it allowed me to plan out my movie before I made it. This process is also useful because you can mockup up each frame to see if you need to adjust the layout or add more objects.

These following images are screenshots of the processes I went through to create this movie.

These screenshots, present each comp, that makes up the movie. Each comp is layered with the layers from the illustrator files. I used the layers, so it would allow me to use transitions between each scene.

This is the final movie, that I created in the workshop. However in my own time, I am going to develop it further. I am going to do this by adding sound effects and refine the movement and motion, to make it smoother. I think this outcome is alright, however I feel that each scene feels ruched because some of the transitions are really fast. If I slow them down and refine the transitions, I think that the video will be easier to read and enjoy.

Personal Development

Here is further development of the piece I created in the workshop. In my personal time, I decided to develop this peice further. I wanted to do this because I felt that the workshop version was unfinished, due to the time limit of the workshop.

In this developed version of the movie, I added sound effects, to compliment the facts and movements of the objects. I did this because I felt that the facts and objects needed sound. Without the sound, I felt that video was kind of bland and needed the sound to make it more interesting. If I was to remake this video, I would add more illustrations of different objects relating to yellow, so maybe a banana or another car. I would also extend each scene, so that the transitions are slower and the text is easier to read.

This extra version adds Taxi text to the taxi stripe scene. I created this because I felt that that scene still need something extra too it. If I was to make this movie longer, I would add more facts about Yellow but I would also make each scene slightly longer so that the text is easier to read.

Artist Research

Markus Magnusson

Markus Magnusson is a Swedish born Animator, who is known for his animated doodles. He has worked with Google to create Google Doodles and Wizard sticker packs for dropbox (Motion Design School, 2021). He also runs a course on Motion Design school, teaching motion graphics and animation techniques.

This is an example of animation by Magnusson called "Bunny Jump promo". I personally like this animation because it reminds me of an old children cartoon. I think that the style of rabbit creates nostalgia for me because it reminds me of old hand drawn cartoons. I also like how he has used the grid and the curved line to present how the rabbit will jump across. This adds a conceptual aesthetic to the animation. I also think that the use of shadow is important in this animation, because it adds a sense of realism to it. However, I think that it would be interesting, if Magnusson, created another version of this animation with another background or scenery.
